Here are a few notes from Friday’s spring practice at Mississippi State. I’m a little late getting these up tonight due to practice and the baseball game going back-to-back.

Today was the Bulldogs first day in pads.

Sophomore wide receiver Fred Ross is the newest addition to the injury pit joining senior defensive tackles Kaleb Eulls and P.J. Jones and sophomore tight end Gus Walley.

The 7-on-7 drills usually done in practice were skipped today and the scrimmage portion seemed longer, likely due to the first day in pads.

Probably the most impressive thing I saw during the scrimmage was sophomore quarterback Damian Williams scrambling out of the pocket to his right and was matched stride for stride by sophomore defensive tackle Nick James, who eventually forced him out of bounds at the line of scrimmage. James also had two sacks in the scrimmage and has continued to keep his weight down.

Today was the first day that redshirt freshman wide receiver Shelby Christy has participated fully, going through team drills and participating in the scrimmage.

Williams was picked off by sophomore safety Deontay Evans.

Sophomore safety/ linebacker Quadry Antoine had a tackle for loss while sophomore defensive end Torrey Dale, junior linebacker Zach Jackson and sophomore defensive tackle Jordan Washington all had a sack each.

There were portions of the scrimmage where the Bulldogs showed a three-man front on the defensive line consisting of senior Preston Smith, junior Ryan Brown and sophomore Chris Jones.

Junior linebacker Benardrick McKinney absolutely trucked sophomore running back Ashton Shumpert at the line of scrimmage.

Jones lined up some as a defensive end.

Junior wide receiver Joe Morrow made a great diving catch on a long pass down the left sideline from Williams. Redshirt freshman Jahmere Irvin-Sills had good coverage on the play but it was a heck of an effort by Morrow to go get the football.

Williams also tossed a long touchdown to a streaking sophomore wideout Fred Brown down the right sideline. Sophomore cornerback Cedric Jiles was matching Brown stride for stride but the throw was dropped perfectly over him into the awaiting arms of Brown.

Sophomore linebacker DeAndre Ward picked off walk-on quarterback Josiah Phillips.

Senior tight end Malcolm Johnson made the catch of the day with a one-handed snag over the middle. Junior quarterback Dak Prescott squeezed it between two defenders and Johnson was able to haul it in with one paw.

Senior wide receiver Jeremey Chappelle was able to turn what should be a routine catch into an acrobatic juggling grab on the left sideline. The ball hit Chappelle right in the hands before bouncing up a couple of feet. But it was a nice job of concentration on his part to stay with it and made the snag on his second opportunity.

Sophomore safety Kivon Coman tackled Shumpert in the backfield on the final play of the scrimmage.
