Today was a beautiful afternoon in Starkville which should make for a great atmosphere for tonight’s baseball game against Vanderbilt on ESPNU.

Senior defensive tackles Kaleb Eulls and P.J. Jones continued to be in the injury pit along with sophomore tight end Gus Walley.

Former safety Nickoe Whitley was at practice today.

During the pass skeleton drill, senior safety Justin Cox, junior cornerback Taveze Calhoun, redshirt freshman corner Jahmere Irvin-Sills and sophomore corner Tolando Cleveland all broke up passes.

Freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald fired some balls in there with some surprising zip. Fitzgerald also showed some touch on the ball lofting a long 40-yard completion to junior wide receiver Joe Morrow on the right sideline.

Junior quarterback Dak Prescott followed that Fitzgerald pass up with an 80-yard touchdown of his own to senior wideout Robert Johnson down the left sideline.

Tight ends Artimas Samuel (sophomore) and B.J. Hammond (redshirt freshman) both displayed some nice hands during the pass skeleton drill.

Junior running back Josh Robinson went down early on during Saturday’s practice and did not return. It looked to be some sort of leg injury but did not appear to be anything too serious. However it is something to keep an eye on when the team returns to practice on Tuesday.

Some highlights from the team portion of practice were a Calhoun interception of Prescott, a 30-yard run by senior running back Nick Griffin, a 40-yard catch by senior receiver Jameon Lewis, a sack by sophomore defensive tackle Nick James and a pick-six by junior cornerback Will Redmond off Prescott.

Junior linebacker Zach Jackson made a sack early on in the scrimmage portion of practice and later had a pick-six from Fitzgerald.

Walk-on tight end Lawrence Brown made a juggling catch.

Sophomore defensive end A.J. Jefferson batted a pass down at the line of scrimmage.

Practice was kept up-tempo by D.J. John Clark. The Bulldogs director of football operations is in charge of playing music throughout practice and has a nice variety of everything from hip-hop to classic rock to country.

Senior cornerback Jamerson Love also had a pick-six after Prescott’s pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage. Love cut in front of sophomore running back Ashton Shumpert to make the grab and took it back about 20-yards for the score.

Safeties Deontay Evans (sophomore) and Kendrick Market (junior) both had pass deflections.

Junior college offensive line transfer Jocquell Johnson has yet to appear on the three-deep depth chart during the scrimmage portion of practice during the first week.

Sophomore Brandon Holloway has split time between running back and receiver the first week of spring but his hands are still as unreliable as they’ve always been.

James made a diving interception to end practice.
