It was an unseasonably chilly afternoon for football practice and I’ll admit that I chickened out and viewed practice from the comforts of the cafeteria inside the Seal Building.

During the pass skeleton drill, sophomore safety Kivon Coman had a pick-six off sophomore quarterback Damian Williams.

Once the scrimmage portion of practice started, sophomore defensive end A.J. Jefferson bull rushed sophomore guard Jamaal Clayborn, knocking him far enough into the backfield to break up a pass.

Junior quarterback Dak Prescott heaved a long completion down the right sideline to sophomore wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson for a 40-plus yard gain. The two would connect again later in the scrimmage but this time senior safety Justin Cox jumped the route but just got a piece of the football and Wilson was still able to make the grab and turn it up field.

Junior linebacker Zach Jackson and sophomore defensive tackle Nick James each had a sack. James has trimmed up tremendously and has been an absolute beast so far this spring.

Walk-on quarterback Josiah Phillips had a 40-yard scramble.

Freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald had a 75-yard touchdown toss to sophomore wide receiver Fred Brown down the right sideline.

I talked with senior tight end Brandon Hill after practice and he estimated that he was around 91-percent healthy following surgery on a broken bone in his foot suffered during the Kentucky game. Hill was wearing a boot on his right foot during the interview but says he doesn’t feel any pain while he’s out there practicing and expects to be fully healthy by the time fall camp begins.
