Lindgren on Olson Award watch list

Jacob Lindgren

Jacob Lindgren

Mississippi State junior reliever Jacob Lindgren was named to the watch list for the Gregg Olson Award given annually to the breakout player of the year in college baseball.

Lindgren has lowered his earned run average in conference play from 5.20 a year ago to a league-leading 0.60 this spring. The southpaw from Bay St. Louis is tops in the nation among relief pitchers with 82 strikeouts and leads the country averaging 16.8 strikeouts per inning.

Lindgren is 4-1 overall with a 1.02 ERA and opponents are hitting just .125 against him. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 1/3 innings of work.

The 5-foot-11, 203-pounder is a candidate for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award and a finalist for the C Spire Ferriss Trophy.

The Gregg Olson Award is named after the former Auburn standout and MLB closer. Semifinalists will be named on May 30 and the winner will be announced during the College World Series.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
