Live from Davis Wade Stadium

davis wade stadium nightMississippi State opens its 115th football season in a newly renovated $75 million expansion of Davis Wade Stadium. The Bulldogs are also celebrating the 100th anniversary of Scott Field. MSU’s first opponent will be Southern Miss, renewing the in-state rivalry for the first time since 1990.

It’s gonna be a wet one tonight as strong afternoon showers have rolled in and have been off and on since I’ve arrived. The weather doesn’t appear to have affected the crowd too much as the Junction is full of folks. The dueling MooTubes are pretty impressive to see and the bowled in end zone looks good. My man Kedrick Storey is here helping out tonight and will have a story in tomorrow’s paper on the new stadium expansion.

I’ll be here updating throughout the evening so stay tuned…

MSU has arrived and the players are currently walking the field. Several Southern Miss players are already out on the field getting loose.

They’ve got the Arkansas-Auburn game playing on the jumbotrons. Punters Logan Cooke and Devon Bell are both out on the field getting kicking.

Southern Miss will be wearing black helmets with black facemasks, white jerseys and pants that are white in the front and gold in the rear…literally.

The Famous Maroon Band is making their way into the stadium. It’s already really loud in here and the stadium is only about 1/10 full.

Former Itawamba AHS running back Ashton Shumpert will not play tonight. He’s serving a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules.

First year tight ends Darrion Hutcherson and Rashun Dixon are both dressed out during warm-ups. Most of the 2014 signing class is not dressed out.

Last night it was tweeted that running back Josh Robinson would wear No. 13 this season. He’s wearing his usual No. 34 during pregame warm-ups.

Defensive tackle Nick James is dressed out for today’s game. The big sophomore redshirted last season.

Former MSU commitments on Southern Miss’ roster include wide receiver Tyre’oune Holmes and offensive lineman Norman Price. Former MSU player Adarrius Perkins is also a junior safety for the Golden Eagles. Former USM commitments on the Bulldogs roster include quarterback Damian Williams, safety Brandon Bryant and offensive lineman Ronald Cochran.

No kicker was named a starter during pregame lineups on the video board. Justin Malone was announced as a starter at guard and Justin Senior at right tackle.

Bulldogs are clad in maroon helmets with white facemasks, maroon jerseys closely to what they wore in the late 90’s and white pants.

MSU captains for the year are Dillon Day, Malcolm Johnson and Jay Hughes.

Southern Miss has won the toss and deferred to the second half.

Freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald is dressed out.

Robinson will wear No. 13 after all.

Dak Prescott completes the first play of the year to Robert Johnson for 11-yards and a first down.

Bulldogs going no huddle to start the game.

On the opening drive, Prescott with a 25-yard touchdown pass to De’Runnya Wilson. Sobiesk PAT, 7-0 MSU 12:35 1st

Preston Smith intercepts Nick Mullens on USM’s opening drive and returns it to the USM  4-yard line.

Hutcherson on the field in the goal line package.

Golden Eagles with a goal line stand at the 1-yard line and take over on downs.

USM RB George Payne shaken up.

Williams takes over at quarterback for MSU’s third drive. The former USM commitment goes three-and-out. I’m not sure what that was but makes for a good postgame question for Dan Mullen.

Prescott back in at quarterback for the fourth series. USM has three straight 3-and-outs.

Graves missed a 40-yard field goal. State has squandered three straight drives with good field position.

USM’s Markese Triplett has the ball stripped by Zach Jackson following a first down catch and A.J. Jefferson recovers it at the MSU 34-yard line.

Nick Griffin with a 1-yard touchdown run. He had some nice runs on that drive. Sobiesk PAT, 14-0 MSU 12:22 2nd

Prescott picked off in the end zone by Kalan Reed.

Oakland Raiders offensive guard Gabe Jackson is on the sideline.

Wilson and Jameon Lewis both going for the deep ball but it’s broken up the official.

Prescott with a 35-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Fred Ross. Graves PAT, 21-0 MSU 4:15 2nd. That was Ross’ first career touchdown.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Johnthan Banks is here as well.

Smith sacks Mullens but is flagged for a facemask in the process.

Prescott with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Johnson. Sobiesk PAT, 28-0 MSU 0:35 2nd.

Hughes picks off Mullens in the end zone.
