Mississippi State’s Preston Smith was named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week following the Bulldogs 49-0 win against Southern Miss.

The senior defensive end recorded two tackles, an interception, broke up a pass and blocked a field goal that was returned 68-yards by Jay Hughes for a touchdown.

Smith’s efforts helped the Bulldogs record their first shutout since 1999 surrendering just 283 yards to the Golden Eagles.

The 6-foot-6, 270-pounder from Stone Mountain, Ga., is the first MSU defensive lineman to receive the honor since Fletcher Cox did it four times during the 2011 season.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
