Live from Davis Wade Stadium

davis wade dayI just arrived in the press box for today’s game against UAB. As expected, it’s a lot more humid today but other than that it’s a beautiful afternoon and it appears the rain is going to hold off. I’m going to go down to the field and talk to my friend and former teammate Jody Wright whenever UAB arrives. You can read the story I wrote on him Friday here. I’m still interested to see the health status of Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott. Although Dan Mullen says he’s going to play, I’m a little more skeptical that it’s just a ploy to throw off the Blazers game planning. But I guess we will find out shortly.

I’ll be here throughout the duration so stay tuned. Remember that today’s game is on FSN today.

Prescott was not wearing a boot or cast when he got off the team bus. Damian Williams, Nick Fitzgerald and Elijah Staley are all on the field now running sprints but no sign of Prescott.

Former MSU running back Derrick Milton just scored on a 9-yard touchdown to give McNeese State a 7-0 lead at Nebraska.

True freshman wide receiver Jamoral Graham is dressed out.

Prescott is out on the field now warming up. Nothing appears to be on his feet except socks and cleats.

Wide receiver Jameon Lewis is down on the field warming up as well. He missed practice earlier this week after his brother was shot and killed.

MSU’s the first team I’ve seen go through pregame entirely in shorts. They did it last week as well.

Running back Ashton Shumpert is dressed out. He was suspended for a violation of team rules last week.

It’s 30 minutes until kickoff and a lot of fans are going to have to pile in for MSU to keep its sellout streak alive.

For MSU, defensive back Tyrell Miller will wear No. 27 and kicker Westin Graves will wear No. 45.

No kicker was announced in the starting lineup. 14 starters were announced on the video board on defense. Lewis and Prescott were announced as starters on offense.

UAB won the toss and deferred to the second half. MSU will receive to start the game.

Lewis and Justin Cox back deep on the kickoff return.

Prescott starts the game at quarterback. He runs for a first down on the second play from scrimmage.

On the third play, Prescott completes a 68-yard touchdown pass to Robert Johnson. Evan Sobiesk PAT, 7-0 MSU 14:03 1st.

UAB’s first play from scrimmage is a delay of game penalty. The Blazers first drive yields two first downs but stalls at midfield.

Graham makes his collegiate debut.

Tight end Gus Walley also make his collegiate debut.

Williams takes over for drive No. 2 at quarterback. After a first down, a snap surprises Williams and he’s sacked and fumbles. Josh Robinson pounces on it but it’s a loss of 15 yards.

Prescott back in for series No. 3.

Cornerback Taveze Calhoun shaken up. Had to be helped off the field.

Ty Long kicks a 44-yard field goal for UAB, 7-3 MSU 5:31 1ST

Williams back in for the fourth series.

Like last week, MSU’s offense looked good on the opening drive but has struggled since. Switching QB’s every series hasn’t helped.

Prescott picked off by Kalen Jackson. He just threw that one up for grabs.

For the second week in a row, Preston Smith picks off a pass. He intercepts Cody Clements one-handed and returns it 21-yards for a touchdown. Graves missed the point after, 13-3 MSU 0:43 1ST.

Josh Robinson with a 18-yard touchdown run. Sobiesk’s PAT clanks off the right upright, 19-17 MSU 11:37 2nd.

For the first time in the game, Prescott is getting back-to-back series at quarterback.

Long with a 46-yard field goal, 20-19 UAB 8:06 2nd.

Prescott with a 20-yard touchdown to Walley. It was his first career catch. Sobiesk even made the PAT, 26-20 MSU 5:02 2nd.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
