Mississippi State coach John Cohen welcomes the No. 6 recruiting class to campus this fall according to Collegiate Baseball.

A dozen of the Diamond Dogs 16 member signing class were All-Americans on the high school or junior college level. Nine newcomers arrive from the junior college ranks while seven others are high school additions.

“It is humbling when national industry experts identify the work of (assistant coaches) Nick Mingione and Butch Thompson, two of the best recruiters in the entire country,” said MSU coach John Cohen in a release. “It is cliché to say the overall value of our recruiting class will not be known until a few seasons from now, but we feel very confident in their ability to develop and perform at an extremely high level.”

The class features nine pitchers, six infielders, four outfielders and a catcher. Two signees – Cole Gordon and Jesse McCord – are both listed as pitchers and position players with Gordon listed as both an infielder and outfielder.

MSU lost two signees – catcher Chase Vallot and shortstop Dale Burdick – to the MLB Draft.

It is the second straight year for the Bulldogs to bring in a top 10 class, marking just the third time in school history for the program to do so. State signed top 10 classes in 1985-86 and 1990-91.

The Diamond Dogs’ 2013 class was rated No. 2 nationally by Collegiate Baseball.

Mississippi State begins fall scrimmages on Oct. 14.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
