Mississippi State pitching coach Butch Thompson has been named the 2014 National Assistant Coach of the Year by both Baseball America and the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Thompson is starting his seventh season in Starkville. His hurlers posted a 3.06 ERA with 513 strikeouts in 571.1 innings of work last season. Thompson has coached 22 All-American pitchers during his 22 seasons.

I am thankful for every coach who has invested in me, every coach that has worked alongside me and every player who has worked hard and performed well to the team concept,” Thompson said in a release.

The Amory native is the first MSU coach to win the award and the first from the SEC since 2011.

Thompson is also being inducted into the Itawamba Community College Hall of Fame on Oct. 25. He was a closer for the Indians from 1989-90.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
