JACKSON – Mississippi State sophomore outfielder Reid Humphreys and senior first baseman Wes Rea combined for nine RBIs as White pummeled Maroon by a score of 15-3 Saturday afternoon at historic Smith-Wills Stadium. An estimated 1,000 Bulldog fans attended the seven-inning affair, which marked MSU’s third scrimmage of the fall.
Humphreys, playing close to his hometown of Brandon, finished the day 2-for-3 with five RBIs, including a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. Despite being hit by a pitch twice, Rea added to White’s run total by driving in four runs on two hits, including a two-RBI double in the third.
Continuing his outstanding fall was White outfielder Jacob Robson, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored. Fellow sophomore Gavin Collins also had a big day offensively for the home team, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and multiple runs scored.
White starter Austin Sexton baffled hitters in his fall debut, tossing four shutout innings with two hits allowed. The righty struck out two and walked one, before being replaced by sophomore lefty Vance Tatum, who struck out a game-high five in two innings of work. Senior righty Trevor Fitts pitched a scoreless seventh to cap off the victory.
The trio of junior transfer Matt Spruill (2-for-4, RBI), senior infielder Matthew Britton (2-for-2, run) and senior catcher Cody Walker (2-for-2) collected multiple hits for Maroon.
State returns to action Sunday for a 1 p.m. scrimmage at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville. The time is subject to change.
