STARKVILLE – Sophomore catcher Gavin Collins broke open a 2-2 tie with a three-RBI double in the fourth as Gray cruised to a 6-2 victory against Maroon in Mississippi State baseball’s eighth scrimmage of the fall. The Sunday exhibition at Dudy Noble Field lasted five innings.
Seven of the nine batters for Gray recorded a hit, led by Collins, who went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, two walks and a double. Junior transfer John Holland totaled two RBIs, a run and a walk, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Redshirt sophomore Cody Brown and true freshman Cole Gordon each scored twice and had a base hit.
For Maroon, sophomore transfer Luke Reynolds continued his impressive fall, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore outfielder Reid Humphreys wrapped up his weekend with an RBI double and a walk. Senior infielder Seth Heck finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Junior right-hander Trevor Fitts was the star on the mound for the Bulldogs, pitching three scoreless stanzas for Gray out of the bullpen. Senior lefty Lucas Laster and sophomore righty Dakota Hudson both made their fall debuts on the mound.
Tied at 2-2 with two outs in the top of the fourth, Collins launched a 3-2 pitch to the top of the wall in the left-center gap, just missing a grand slam. Brown, junior infielder Matt Spruill and Holland all scored on the play, giving Gray a commanding 6-2 lead. The victors scored their final run in the fifth when redshirt freshman Brent Rooker drew a bases-loaded walk.
