STARKVILLE – Sophomore junior college transfer Logan Elliott and redshirt senior Ross Mitchell combined for a two-hit shutout Tuesday night, leading Gray to a 5-0 win against Maroon in Mississippi State baseball’s ninth scrimmage of the fall. The five-inning exhibition was held at Dudy Noble Field.
Elliott, a drop-down right-hander, struck out three in 3.2 innings on the mound for Gray, surrendering one hit and a walk. The victory was closed out by the southpaw Mitchell, who struck out one and gave up a hit in 1.1 innings. For Maroon, freshman right-hander Cole Gordon earned the start, striking out a game-high four in 3.0 stanzas. Sophomore righty Zac Houston struck out two in an inning, before redshirt freshman right hander Levi Mintz tossed a scoreless final frame.
Sophomore outfielder Reid Humphreys had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 for Gray with a double and a run scored. Redshirt freshman Dylan Ingram drove in a game-high two runs for Gray, while teammate Cody Brown recorded an RBI and a run scored.
For Maroon, senior outfielder Jake Vickerson reached base twice as the leadoff man with a double and a hit by pitch, while also stealing a base. Newcomer Michael Smith reached base twice as well with a single and a hit by pitch.
State’s next free open scrimmage at Dudy Noble Field is slated for 2 p.m. CT Saturday. The time is subject to change.
