Mississippi State is the first ever No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoffs.
The initial rankings were released Tuesday evening and currently have the Bulldogs facing off against archrival Ole Miss as the fourth seed in the Sugar Bowl Jan. 1 in New Orleans.
“It’s cool and is something that you can never take away from the university or this program,” said MSU quarterback Dak Prescott. “We’re the first team ever to be ranked No. 1.”
Defending National Champion Florida State holds the No. 2 seed ranking while the team it met in the final BCS Championship game, Auburn, is the three seed.
The College Football Playoff Selection Committee will issue rankings weekly with the final rankings coming on Dec. 7.
The other semifinal game will be played in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The inaugural national championship game will be played Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
