STARKVILLE – Three Gray pitchers combined for a 5-0 shutout victory against Maroon in Mississippi State baseball’s 13th instrasquad scrimmage of the fall Tuesday night. A total of four double plays were turned in the five-inning exhibition held at Dudy Noble Field.
True freshman Paxton Stover earned the start for Gray, tossing 2.1 scoreless stanzas on the bump. The left hander was replaced by righty Zac Houston, who recorded five outs before senior righty Trevor Fitts closed out the victory with an inning of work.
Offensively for Gray, a trio of Bulldogs collected multiple hits. Leadoff hitter Cody Brown went 2-for-2 with a run and a walk, sophomore catcher Gavin Collins finished 2-for-3 with a run and redshirt freshman Brent Rooker totaled two hits, an RBI, a run and a hit by pitch. Joining Rooker with RBIs were junior transfer Michael Smith (1-for-2, RBI) and redshirt senior Zack Randolph (1-for-2, 2 RBIs).
On the bump for Maroon, sophomore southpaw Vance Tatum stood out in a losing effort, striking out four in two shutout frames. At the plate, sophomore Reid Humphreys went 2-for-3, while senior Jake Vickerson tallied a fall-high three walks.
Gray broke the game open in the second with a four spot in the run column. After Rooker scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0, Randolph roped a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right with two outs, scoring redshirt freshman Joey Swinarski and junior transfer Matt Spruill. Collins, pinch running for Randolph, eventually came around from first and scored on a double to the gap in left by Smith.
The final run of the game came in the top of the fifth with Rooker singled home Brown on a single to center.
State’s next free open scrimmage at Dudy Noble Field is tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. CT Friday.
