Mississippi State senior center Martha Alwal was selected first team All-SEC by the league’s coaches on Wednesday.

Last season, Alwal led the conference with 2.7 blocks per contest earning SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors. She also averaged 14.9 points and 8.8 rebounds as a junior.

Alwal is the SEC’s active leader with 257 career blocks, which ranks 10th all-time. She also has 31 career double-doubles.

Alwal, along with senior Savannah Carter, are both injured according to coach Vic Schaefer.

“Both of them have been given a time frame that’s inside of the first game,” Schaefer said. “But whether it happens or not is up to them and how they feel. We’re certainly not in any position to rush them back. We’re going to give them their due diligence and allow them to fully recover because I need them January and February and not in November and December.”

The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth by the league’s coaches.
