STARKVILLE – Redshirt junior Preston Brown  tossed five innings of scoreless ball, leading Maroon to a commanding 8-0 defeat of Gray in Mississippi State’s 15th scrimmage of the fall. The exhibition at Dudy Noble Field lasted seven innings.

In the start, Brown walked none and struck out six batters, the most by any Diamond Dawg hurler this fall. Sophomore right-hander Zac Houston closed the game for Maroon with two innings of one-hit ball. Brown’s counterpart, Gray starter Austin Sexton, surrendered just one earned run in 4.1 innings, striking out five and walking one. In all, six State pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts.

Offensively, sophomore outfielder Reid Humphreys led the way for Maroon, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs and a double. Junior college transfers Josh Lovelady (2-for-3, two runs, RBI) and John Holland (2-for-2, two runs, double, walk, RBI) also collected multiple hits for the victors. Senior team captain  Wes Rea joined Holland, Humphreys and Lovelady by driving in a run.

State’s next free open scrimmage at Dudy Noble Field is tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. CT Sunday.
