STARKVILLE – Sophomore transfer Luke Reynolds hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel Maroon a 5-4 victory against Gray Tuesday night in Mississippi State’s 17th scrimmage of the fall. The exhibition was held at Dudy Noble Field.
Trailing 4-1 after five complete innings, Gray redshirt freshman outfielder Brent Rooker tied up the game with a two-out, bases-clearing double to the gap in left center. The Germantown, Tenn., native finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of two baggers.
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the sixth, Maroon redshirt sophomore Cody Brown drew a two-out walk and proceeded to steal second. Following a walk by junior catcher Josh Lovelady, Brown scored the game-ending run on a single by Reynolds.
Reynolds ended the night 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, while leadoff hitter Michael Smith went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Redshirt freshman Joey Swinarski continued to swing the bat well, going 2-for-3 with a run. Brown, who scored the game-winning run, went 1-for-2 with a pair of runs and one driven in.
On offense for Gray, sophomore catcher Gavin Collins walked three times and scored twice, while true freshman Ryan Gridley earned two base on balls to go along with a single.
Highlighting MSU’s pitching was Gray’s middle relief trio of redshirt senior lefty Ross Mitchell, senior righty Trevor Fitts and sophomore southpaw Vance Tatum, who combined to toss 3.1 scoreless stanzas.
