STARKVILLE – Gray scored three runs in the first and never looked back, picking up a 5-2 victory against Maroon in Game Two of the Mississippi State baseball Bulldog World Series. The seven-inning victory at Dudy Noble Field gave Gray a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
Redshirt junior right-hander Preston Brown drew the start for the victors, striking out five in as many innings. The righty surrendered one run on five hits and a walk. True freshman right hander Aaron Dominguez closed the game with two strong innings, allowing one run on a hit and two walks with one strikeout.
At the plate, team captain Zack Randolph had his second-straight multi-hit game in the series, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Redshirt freshman outfielder Brent Rooker (2-for-3, two runs, RBI) and junior transfer Matt Spruill (2-for-3, RBI) also had multiple base knocks. Senior outfielder Jake Vickerson scored twice and tripled.
For Maroon, a pair of sophomores stood out in a losing effort. Catcher Gavin Collins went 2-for-3 at the dish with a double and a run scored, while right hander Zac Houston tossed 3.1 shutout innings of relief.
Gray put up a three spot in the bottom of the first with RBI singles by Rooker, Randolph and Spruill. Maroon tried to get back into it in the third with an RBI single by redshirt sophomore Cody Brown, but runs by Vickerson and Rooker in the bottom of the frame made it a 5-1 score.
Both teams played scoreless ball until the seventh when Collins scored the final run of the game for Maroon on a sacrifice fly by junior transfer Trent Waddell.
Gray will go for the series sweep in Game Three of the Bulldog World Series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Dudy Noble Field. Admission is free and open to the public.
