Mississippi State had a quick turnaround after practicing Friday evening and was back at work early Saturday morning. It was the Bulldogs third practice in preparation for the Orange Bowl against Georgia Tech.
Here are a few notes I jotted down in my notebook while I was there…
During the scrimmage portion of practice, sophomore safety Kivon Coman broke up a pass from freshman Nick Fitzgerald that was intended for freshman wideout Jamoral Graham.
Freshman defensive tackle Cory Thomas sacked sophmore quarterback Damian Williams.
A dozen players were excused from practice to attend their graduation ceremony – quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Nick Griffin, wide receivers Jameon Lewis and Robert Johnson, tight end Brandon Hill, offensive linemen Dillon Day, Justin Malone and Ben Beckwith, defensive linemen Kaleb Eulls and John Harris, linebacker Matthew Wells and cornerback Jamerson Love.
Junior Jocquell Johnson lined up at right tackle, which is were he played last season at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Sophomore defensive tackle Chris Jones batted down a Fitzgerald pass at the line of scrimmage.
Sophomore Jamaal Clayborn worked at center.
MSU is hosting four Mississippi junior college official visitors this weekend and all were at practice. Gulf Coast offensive tackle Martinas Rankin, Holmes linebacker Traver Jung and Copiah-Lincoln defensive end Jonathan Calvin and wide receiver Donald Gray. Jung, Calvin and Gray are already committed to the Bulldogs.
Today’s practice ended with a field goal competition between sophomore Evan Sobiesk, freshman Westin Graves and junior Devon Bell. All were inconsistent.
