There was a big crowd on hand at today’s open practice. Fans took advantage of the nice weather and turned out by the hundreds to watch Mississippi State prepare for the Orange Bowl.

Here are a few things I jotted down in my notebook while I was out there…

During kickoff return drills, sophomore Brandon Holloway took two back to the house for touchdowns. Freshman Jamoral Graham returned one for a score as did senior Jamerson Love.

Junior Will Redmond muffed kickoff and I still don’t understand why senior Robert Johnson is the starting kickoff returner.

Junior safety Kendrick Market was out at practice but had to keep his leg propped up on a scooter just a few days removed from Achilles surgery. Sophomore cornerback Cedric Jiles and redshirt freshman wide receiver Shelby Christy were also at practice but did not dress.

During special teams drills, coach Greg Knox used a bullhorn to holler at his players. I’m not sure why because I doubt anyone has trouble hearing Knox’s voice out there.

Freshman quarterback Elijah Staley spent Sunday in the injury pit and was wearing a stabilizer on his right leg.

Sophomore Lawrence Brown was wearing No. 54 and playing defensive tackle on the scout team. Brown was a walk-on tight end and played his high school ball at New Hope.

Freshman Deion Calhoun was working at center.

During the scrimmage portion of practice, walk-on freshman linebacker Kelan Chairs intercepted a tipped pass from freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Jahmere Irvin-Sills came up and popped Graham on a bubble screen. Sophomore walk-on cornerback Brandon Davis also delivered a pretty good lick a few plays later.

Sophomore defensive tackle Chris Jones batted down a Fitzgerald pass at the line of scrimmage.

Redshirt freshman safety Brandon Wells intercepted Fitzgerald.

Sophomore safety Deontay Evans picked off junior quarterback Dak Prescott.

Practice once again ended with field goals but I snuck away to beat the crowd since we did not have any post practice media availability.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
