Mullen undecided on defensive opening

Just talk about practice today:

Mullen: “Practice was good. I think we had a good week this week with our guys. The great thing with the bowl game, you get this week. We prep it that we are going to be ready after practice tomorrow. We treat it like a game week and we’re ready to go play the game. Then we get to the bowl and we have time to polish it all up and be really confident. I think we had a really good week of practice.”

Have you made any decisions as far as who will call the defensive plays:

Mullen: “No. We’re going to talk about that stuff when we get down there. We’ll get all that figured out when we get down there. We have a great program. We have good coaches, so we’re going to get everybody in position and we’re going to get everybody coached up.”

How has it been between those defensive coaches:

Mullen: “Good. I’ve spent some more time on the defensive side of the ball, just making sure I’m over there to help. We have heavy loaded offensive coaches now. It’s tightly tilted because I go to the offensive side and then it gets heavier with one missing over there, so I tried to balance that out this week.”

How valuable is it to have experienced defensive guys:

Mullen: “This is a pogrom. It’s not about a person, it’s not about any of that stuff. The psycho defense is 11 guys on the field. That’s what we run here. The system has changed since I’ve been the head coach really. We run the same defense since I’ve been the head coach. It’s the scheme we’re going to run and that we run. I think our guys, having some older players, they’re very confident in what we do and it doesn’t matter who’s out there calling it.”

Have you had a chance to reach out to anybody as far as the defensive coordinator job:

Mullen: “I don’t plan on making any decision. We’re going to research it all and we’re going to get somebody that’s how were going to do it. We’re going to get the staff organized and continue to have a great staff. We’re not going to have anybody in place before the bowl game.”

How does that work, do you keep a list on hand:

Mullen: “We research. There’s always a list of things, who’s out there, who’s done well, who fits our personality, their personality has to fit here. It’s more than just a coach. It’s someone who’s coming in and part of our program. They have to fit our program, it’s really an important thing for me.”

What’s the plan for tomorrow’s practice:

Mullen: “It’s regular Thursday practice, so we’ll do our regular Thursday.”

What’s your schedule for next week:

Mullen: “For me, with the transition, I’ll probably be in the office all week getting caught up on the offensive side of the ball making sure I’m ready to go.”
