Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen named the George Munger Award winner on Monday. The award is presented annually to the top college football coach by the Maxwell Football Club.

Mullen guided the eighth-ranked Bulldogs to a 10-2 record during the regular season including a five week stint at No. 1 and an Orange Bowl bid in his sixth season.

Coach Mullen has engineered a tremendous season for the Mississippi State football program,” Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert said in a released statement. “The team’s 10-2 record is a great testament to the hard work of Coach and his staff, and also to the dedication shown by the student-athletes involved in the football program at Mississippi State University.”

Mullen is just the fourth Southeastern Conference coach to claim the award and first since Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee in 1998.

The award will be formally be presented to Mullen in Atlantic City, N.J. on March 13.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
