A familiar face is returning to Dan Mullen‘s coaching staff at Mississippi State.
Louisiana Tech’s Manny Diaz will return to the Bulldogs for a second time to serve as defensive coordinator.
Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated broke the news on Monday afternoon and has since been confirmed the Daily Journal through multiple sources.
Diaz was the defensive coordinator at MSU in 2010. Under his watch, the Bulldogs ranked 17th in both rushing defense (214.9) and tackles for loss (7.0). It also finished 22nd in turnovers (28) and scoring defense (19.9 ppg).
The 40-year old left Starkville to take the defensive coordinator job at Texas. Diaz spent 2011-13 in Austin before being fired following a loss to BYU. This fall, Diaz served as defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech.
Diaz’s defense was ranked 34th in total defense at Louisiana Tech. Mississippi State was 85th in total defense in 2014 under Geoff Collins, who left on Dec. 16 for Florida.
Diaz is the fifth defensive coordinator hire Mullen has made during his tenure.
