STARKVILLE  With the bats warming up similar to the weather, No. 23 Mississippi State baseball held its second intrasquad scrimmage of 2015 Sunday at Dudy Noble Field. Jump started by sophomore slugger Reid Humphrey’s home run in the first, Gray defeated Maroon by a final score of 8-4 in front of an estimated 250 fans.

Humphreys finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run for the victors, while junior transfer Josh Lovelady went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double. Newcomers Ryan Gridley (1-for-3) and Matt Spruill (0-for-1, two walks) combined to score half of Gray’s runs.

“We need Reid’s bat in the lineup,” head coach John Cohen said. “He has worked so hard in the strength and conditioning part of our program. He is a very talented hitter.”

For Maroon, senior Cody Walker recorded a two-run double. Also driving in runs were junior transfer Michael Smith (1-for-1) and sophomore outfielder Cody Brown (1-for-2, run).

After being down 4-3, Gray’s duo of freshman right-hander Aaron Dominiguez and redshirt freshman righty Levi Mintz shut down the Maroon offense, combining for 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen as Gray stormed back to win with a five-run third.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
