Senior infielder Matthew Britton sliced a game-tying two-RBI single in the bottom of the final frame, resulting in a 3-3 tie between Maroon and Gray in Mississippi State baseball’s sixth intrasquad scrimmage of the spring. The six-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.
A pitchers’ duel broke out to start the game with Gray right-handed starter Jesse McCord battling sophomore righty Austin Sexton. McCord struck out six in four innings, allowing one run on two hits and a pair of walks. Sexton fanned five batters, surrendering two runs on four hits and a walk.
Maroon jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI by sophomore outfielder Reid Humphreys in the first and a leadoff home run in the second by junior outfielder Michael Smith.
Redshirt junior infielder John Holland put Gray on the board in the fourth, cutting the deficit in half by scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Matt Spruill.
Maroon jumped out to a two-run lead again in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI single to right field by redshirt freshman Joey Swinarski.
Down 3-1 in the final inning, redshirt sophomore Cody Brown led off with a walk. Holland then singled, before preseason All-SEC catcher Gavin Collins drew a base on balls to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Britton tied the game with a two-RBI single to left, giving the game its final score of 3-3.
Holland ended the weekend having reached base safely in his last seven-consecutive plate appearances, going 6 for 6 with five singles, a double and a walk.
