A two-out RBI single by senior shortstop Seth Heck was the difference Tuesday night as Gray defeated Maroon, 3-2, in Mississippi State baseball’s seventh intrasquad scrimmage of the spring. The five-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.

Heck and redshirt sophomore Cody Brown both went 2 for 3 with a run. Redshirt freshman Brent Rooker recorded the only other hit for the winners, a two-RBI double to the gap in the first. Heck’s single came in the top of the fourth with the game knotted at two.

On the mound, freshman left-hander Paxton Stover earned the win with 3.1 innings of work, giving up two runs as a result of two errors. The newcomer struck out two and walked three. Sophomore right-hander Zac Houston recorded a groundout and a strikeout, before senior closer Trevor Fitts struck out the side in the last inning to get the save.

Senior infielder Matthew Britton (0 for 1, walk, stolen base) and freshman infielder Ryan Gridley (1 for 2) scored the only two runs for Maroon in the bottom of the second. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Robson joined Gridley as the only two Maroon members with base knocks.

True freshman righty Cole Gordon struck out a game-high five batters, giving up two runs in three innings. Sophomore set-up man Vance Tatum was un-hittable in his lone inning of work, striking out two.
