Redshirt freshman outfielder Brent Rooker and true freshman first baseman Cole Gordon each hit three-run home runs in the third inning, leading Gray to a 10-6 victory against Maroon in Mississippi State baseball’s 10th intrasquad scrimmage of the spring. In all, nine different players drove in runs in the five-inning Sunday exhibition at Dudy Noble Field.
Rooker led all hitters on the day, finishing 3 for 3 with three RBIs and three runs. Gordon drove in a game-high four runs with his third-inning dinger and a bases-loaded walk. Also collecting multiple hits for Gray was redshirt junior infielder John Holland (2 for 3).
For Maroon, redshirt sophomore outfielder Jacob Robson recorded two infield singles, an RBI and a run, while redshirt freshman outfielder Joey Swinarski also had two hits, an RBI and a run. Redshirt senior first baseman Wes Rea drove in a game-high two runs, while also scoring once.
Maroon jumped out to a 6-0 lead when it batted around, resulting in six of the first seven batters scoring.
Gray cut into the deficit in the second with a two-RBI double by newcomer Trent Waddell. The visitors took the lead for good in the next stanza with the pair of three-run bleacher blasts by Rooker and Gordon. The victors added on one run each in the last two frames to give the game its final score.
The back-end duo of sophomore southpaw Vance Tatum and senior righty Trevor Fitts closed the door again, combining for three strikeouts in 2.2 innings of hitless relief.
