Mississippi State was picked to finish fifth in the Western Division by the Southeastern Conference coaches on Thursday while sophomore catcher Gavin Collins garnered a first team All-SEC selection.

Collins is the Diamond Dogs top returning hitter batting .304 last spring with eight doubles, a home run and 19 RBI. He is expected out 3-5 weeks following hamate surgery on his left hand.

Last season, MSU finished third in the SEC West and tied for fourth overall in the conference.

Defending national champion Vanderbilt was picked to win the league outright while LSU was the unanimous choice to claim the Western Division crown.

Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
