Mississippi State sophomore Gavin Collins was named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list, an award given annually since 2000 to the top Division I catcher.
Collins caught his first game for the Bulldogs on Wednesday after a hamate injury to his left hand kept him sidelined to start the year. In six games this season, the Lake Forest, Calif., native is batting .083 (1-for-12) with a stolen base.
Collins is MSU’s top returning hitter batting .304 as a freshman with eight doubles, a home run and 19 runs batted in.
Ed Easley is the only former Diamond Dog to win the Bench Award in 2007.
Semifinalists will be named on May 14 and finalists selected on June 2. The winner will be announced on June 25. Kennesaw State backstop Max Pentecost won the award last year.
