Mississippi State held its first spring practice on Tuesday, which was a day earlier than scheduled due to inclement weather expected on Wednesday.

Here are a few notes I jotted down while I was at practice…

Today’s practice was only in shells and shorts.

Sophomore safety Brandon Wells is no longer on the team. I asked head coach Dan Mullen about him after practice and Mullen said Wells had transferred to Pearl River Community College.

Spending time in the injury pit today were sophomore linebackers Dezmond Harris and J.T. Gray, junior quarterback Damian Williams, junior tight end Hunter Bradley, junior wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson, redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Staley, senior safety Kendrick Market and senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun.

Sophomore Jamoral Graham has made the move from wide receiver to cornerback and also switched jersey numbers to No. 9.

Senior quarterback Dak Prescott and junior defensive end Torrey Dale both practiced after being assaulted during spring break last week.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins practiced as well following his arrest last Thursday. Redshirt freshman safety Brandon Bryant and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Grant Harris also both practiced.

Former Bulldogs who attended practice include: Kyle Love, Matthew Wells, Josh Robinson and Derek Sherrod.

Returning from season-ending injuries from last year to practice were sophomore tight end Shelby Christy and junior cornerback Cedric Jiles.

There was also an offensive lineman wearing Damien Robinson‘s jersey and playing right tackle. I never could confirm that it was actually Robinson but Mullen stated after practice that it was still being determined if Robinson would be physically able to play next season should he be granted a sixth year of eligibility. Robinson is listed on the spring roster.

Today was the first practice for six mid-year newcomers. Junior wide receiver Donald Gray wore No. 6, freshman wide receiver Deddrick Thomas wore No. 18, freshman wide receiver Malik Dear wore No. 22 freshman offensive lineman Michael Story wore No. 67, junior offensive lineman Martinas Rankin wore No. 75 and junior defensive end Johnathan Calvin wore No. 97.

MSU defensive end signee Anfernee Mullins of Aliceville, Ala., watched practice.

Another number chance I noticed was senior long snapper Winston Chapman switched to No. 38.

Staley was able to throw to receivers during drills while wearing a brace on his right knee.

During pass skeleton, Prescott was picked off by junior linebacker Richie Brown.

Staley had a pass broken up by redshirt freshman linebacker Gerri Green. Green would later break up another pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald during the scrimmage.

Gray has some really good hands. I didn’t see him drop a pass all day.

Dear has a really thick frame and Rankin is a really huge guy.

Sophomore tight end Rashun Dixon has slimmed up a lot.

During the scrimmage portion of practice, Prescott had a pass broken up by senior cornerback Will Redmond.

I saw that my least favorite play – a draw up the middle to junior running back Brandon Holloway – remains in the playbook.

Sophomore Jahmere Irvin-Sills has moved from cornerback to safety.

Fitzgerald had a pass broken up by junior defensive end Will Coleman at the line of scrimmage. Coleman would later scoop and score on a fumble by sophomore wide receiver Gabe Myles on a jet sweep.

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Cory Thomas had a sack and a tackle for loss.

Calvin broke up a Fitzgerald pass at the line of scrimmage.

Junior defensive tackle Lawrence Brown and senior defensive end Ryan Brown each had a tackle for loss.

Junior defensive tackle Chris Jones and Grant Harris both had a sack.

Prescott completed a 45-yard pass to junior wide receiver Fred Brown.

Practice concluded with extra points. Kicking was senior Devon Bell, sophomore Westin Graves and redshirt freshman Bryce Brown.
