It had been rumored for weeks that Mississippi State and BYU had reached an agreement to meet on the gridiron for a home-and-home series in 2016-17.

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reported that the two school came to terms on Thursday and the Bulldogs announced the match-up on Friday.

The Bulldogs will travel to Provo, Utah on Oct. 15,  2016 and the Cougars will make the return trip to Starkville the following year on Oct. 14.

McMurphy also cited sources stating that FBS independents BYU, Army and Notre Dame would count towards the SEC’s requirement of playing a non-conference Power 5 opponent starting in 2016.

The series between MSU and BYU is tied 1-1 with the Bulldogs winning in Provo 44-28 in 2000 and the Cougars claiming the rematch in Starkville 41-38 the next year.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
