Friday practice notes

Mississippi State held its second spring practice on Friday afternoon and like the first it was conducted in shells and shorts. The Bulldogs will don pads for the first time on Tuesday.

I missed the first part of practice while at home watching the women’s basketball team in the NCAA Tournament on TV but here are a few notes I jotted down in my handy, dandy notebook.

During 1-on-1 drills, junior wide receiver Fred Ross burned sophomore safety Jahmere Irvin-Sills for a long reception.

Senior offensive tackle Damien Robinson is moving around pretty well and looked good to me with his footwork. Robinson is wearing a brace on his right knee after suffering a season-ending ACL tear during fall camp.

I asked offensive line coach John Hevesy about Robinson after practice and he joked that Robinson was at MSU when he arrived seven years ago. Hevesy said he thought Robinson was around during Jackie Sherrill‘s years.

Nobody new was added to the injury pit. Junior wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson, sophomore linebacker Dezmond Harris, junior quarterback Damian Williams, senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun and senior safety Kendrick Market were still in there.

Another Dixon has walked onto the team this spring. This time it is Deshun Dixon, who spent three years playing baseball in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, and is wearing No. 81 and playing wide receiver. The 23-year old joins his older brother, Rashun Dixon, who is a sophomore tight end for the Bulldogs. Both are brothers of Buffalo Bills running back and former MSU standout Anthony Dixon.

The only Dixon brother to not play for the Bulldogs is Antwon Dixon, who played at Hinds Community College and Midwestern State from 2007-10.

During pass skeleton, junior wide receiver Fred Brown beat double coverage to haul in a pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.

Junior cornerback Cedric Jiles jumped a pair of routes to deflect passes by senior quarterback Dak Prescott. One of the plays occured during pass skeleton and the other during the scrimmage.

Sophomore wide receiver Gabe Myles found a hold in coverage and made an easy catch on a Fitzgerald pass.

True freshman Deddrick Thomas made an outstanding diving catch on a 40-yard completion by redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Staley.

During the scrimmage, junior linebacker Beniquez Brown broke up a Prescott pass.

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Cory Thomas nearly had an interception as Fitzgerald’s pass was batted in the air at the line of scrimmage.

They ran the ball a lot more with Fitzgerald during the scrimmage. Some were on options, read options and quarterback draws.¬†Most of Fitzgerald’s passes were on the high side today. He still has some work to do on his accuracy.

Sophomore cornerback Boderick Oliver broke up a pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Josiah Phillips.

Senior linebacker Zach Jackson tackled junior running back Ashton Shumpert in the backfield after an option pitch.

Junior safety Kivon Coman broke up a Prescott pass while in coverage of redshirt freshman wide receiver Jesse Jackson.

Fitzgerald completed a screen pass to redshirt freshman running back Aeris Williams for a nice gain.

There were a trio signees that watched practice today: offensive lineman Harrison Moon, quarterback Nick Tiano and defensive end Kendell Jones.

Also visiting today was 2016 Noxubee County defensive end Jeffrey Simmons.

Former Bulldog defensive end Preston Smith was also on hand.

Competing at kicker was redshirt freshman Bryce Brown, senior Devon Bell and sophomore Westin Graves. Bell looked the best in my opinion.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
