Mississippi State held its fourth spring football practice on Friday, pushed back a day due to inclement weather on Thrusday.

I missed parts of practice while working on men’s and women’s basketball but here are a few notes I jotted down while I was out there.

During 1-on-1 blocking drills, redshirt freshman offensive tackle Elgton Jenkins beat junior defensive end Johnathan Calvin; sophomore offensive lineman Kent Flowers beat redshirt freshman defensive tackle Cory Thomas; junior running back Brandon Holloway beat sophomore safety Jahmere Irvin-Sills; redshirt freshman defensive tackle Braxton Hoyett beat sophomore offensive guard Jake Thomas; redshirt freshman running back Aeris Williams beat junior safety Kivon Coman.

Junior Fred Ross and senior Will Redmond both took turns working at punt returner.

Freshman wide receiver Deddrick Thomas was the newest addition to the injury pit joining junior quarterback Damian Williams, junior wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson, senior safety Kendrick Market, senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun and sophomore linebacker Dezmond Harris.

Working as kickoff returners were Holloway, Redmond, junior Fred Brown, sophomores Donald Gray, Jamoral Graham and Gabe Myles and freshman Malik Dear.

During pass skeleton drills, Graham made a leaping interception over Fred Brown on a pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Staley.

Senior quarterback Dak Prescott tossed a pick-six to junior linebacker Beniquez Brown.

Sophomore wide receiver Kareem Vance Jr. may have had the best day of any player I saw. Vance Jr. made several great catches.

Former Bulldog offensive linemen Dillon Day and Blaine Clausell were on hand watching practice.

I missed a good bit of the scrimmage part of practice due to the timing of MSU releasing the names of the men’s basketball assistant coaching hires. But I did see redshirt freshman safety Zak Neary pickoff redshirt freshman quarterback Josiah Phillips.

There were several jet sweeps for Dear ran.

Aeris Williams caught a touchdown pass from a walk-on quarterback that isn’t listed on the roster on the final play of the scrimmage.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
