Mississippi State held its sixth spring practice on Tuesday and you could tell many players on the team are battling for spots. There were several players feeling feisty which led to a few scraps and tie ups and to me it appeared guys were really getting after it more aggressively today than I’ve seen so far this spring.

With that being said, he are a few notes I jotted down in my notebook while I was out there.

Junior wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson participated the whole practice except for in the scrimmage at the end. Wilson went through all the drills and did not seem to be favoring his right knee very much but did have an ice bag on it during the scrimmage.

During pass skeleton drills, sophomore wide receiver Gabe Myles caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Elijah Staley. Myles had the best day of any player on the roster and is proving to be one of the best playmakers the Bulldogs have. He picked a good day to show out too with his father, former MSU standout Eddie Myles, watching.

Junior safety Kivon Coman made a one-handed pick-six off senior Dak Prescott.

In the injury pit today were freshman wide receiver Deddrick Thomas, sophomore linebacker Dezmond Harris, junior quarterback Damian Williams, senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun and senior safety Kendrick Market. Thomas did do some drills today but had an ice pack on his right quad at the end.

Sophomore tight end Shelby Christy had to leave practice briefly to have his right shoulder bandaged but did return.

Several former Bulldogs were on hand to observe practice including Josh Robinson, Matthew Wells, Benardrick McKinney, Dillon Day and Nick Griffin.

West Point offensive line prospect Scott Lashley was also back for an unofficial visit.

MSU four-star running back signee Nick Gibson also came to watch practice.

During the scrimmage, junior linebacker DeAndre Ward intercepted redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.

The team worked a lot on shovel passes and two of them were really spectacular with Prescott tossing to junior wide receiver Fred Ross and also junior running back Brandon Holloway.

Junior linebacker Quadry Antoine had a pick-six off redshirt freshman quarterback Josiah Phillips.

On a reverse with Ross, senior left tackle Rufus Warren¬†decleated junior defensive end A.J. Jefferson‘s ¬†just in the nick of time along the left sideline to free Ross into the open field.

Senior tight end Darrion Hutcherson hauled in a wobbly Fitzgerald pass for a 35-yard gain.

Myles and redshirt freshman running back Aeris Williams were both in the backfield in a pro set as the Bulldogs ran a read option with Myles. Williams made an outstanding lead block to open a hole for Myles.

Senior linebacker Zach Jackson had a tackle for loss on Aeris Williams. Jackson later broke up a Prescott pass at the line of scrimmage.

Junior linebacker Beniquez Brown made a one-handed interception on a wide receiver reverse pass by Ross.

Myles had a 40-yard gain on a reverse.

Junior defensive tackle Chris Jones sacked Prescott.

Prescott had a 35-yard completion to Ross.

Redshirt freshman safety Brandon Bryant broke up a wide receiver pass from Myles.

Junior defensive end Johnathan Calvin also had a pass deflection at the line of scrimmage.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.

Where was Ashton Shumpert? Not listed in the notes or on the depth chart.

Shumpert and Holloway are alternating reps with the first team. Don’t read too much into spring depth charts. The coaches do a lot of mixing and matching and are trying a lot of different looks.
