Mississippi State held its 10th practice of the spring on Thursday in front of 350-plus area high school coaches for Day 1 of the annual MSU coaches clinic. Most of the day was spent on working on goal line situations for both sides of the ball.

Here are a few things I jotted down in my notebook while I was out there.

As I mentioned, a lot of the work was done inside the 10-yard line. I liked the way senior tight end Darrion Hutcherson at 6-foot-7 and junior receiver De’Runnya Wilson at 6-foot-5 were used. Both made their share of plays but Hutcherson needs to work on consistently catching passes. He admitted that when I chatted with him after practice today.

Senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun (foot) , senior receiver Joe Morrow (shoulder), senior safety Kendrick Market (Achilles), sophomore receiver Gabe Myles (foot) and sophomore linebacker Dezmond Harris (knee) were all in the injury pit today.

Naturally with all of the high school coaches on hand, there were several former Mississippi State players among them. I noticed Austin Wilbanks, Wayne Jones, Casey Welch, Josh Morgan, Brett Morgan, Rob Morgan, Omarr Conner, Joey Sanders and Tobias Smith.

MSU defensive end signee Anfernee Mullins was also in attendance for the second time this spring.

Noxubee County defensive end prospect Jeffery Simmons was also there on another unofficial visit.

During the scrimmage portion of practice, redshirt freshman cornerback Chris Rayford had a pick six on a pass by redshirt freshman quarterback Nick Fitzgerald.

Redshirt freshman defensive end Grant Harris sacked redshirt freshman quarterback Nate Gieb.

Gieb was picked off by sophomore cornerback Boderick Oliver.

Senior quarterback Dak Prescott had a nice completion to junior receiver Fred Ross across the middle for a 20-yard gain.

Junior defensive tackle Chris Jones sacked Prescott.

Junior defensive end Brian Houston had a tackle for loss on redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Henry.

When the scrimmage switched to goal line situations, Chris Jones tackled Prescott for a loss.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Gerri Green batted a Fitzgerald pass high into the air and then leaped up and made the interception off his own tip.

Fitzgerald attempted a jump pass but it was batted away by junior linebacker DeAndre Ward at the last moment.

Prescott completed a screen pass to sophomore receiver Donald Gray but was stopped in his tracks by junior linebacker Beniquez Brown behind the line of scrimmage.

Sophomore linebacker J.T. Gray swatted away a Fitzgerald pass preventing a completion to sophomore tight end B.J. Hammond.

The following is a sequence of plays with the first team offense versus the first team defense and the ball on the 3-yard line going in.

1st play – Junior running back Brandon Holloway rush up the middle for no gain.

2nd play – Hutcherson was wide open and dropped a Prescott pass.

3rd play – Junior defensive tackle Nick James jumped offsides which sent head coach Dan Mullen into a tirade of expletives aimed at defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.

4th play – Hutcherson dropped another pass in the end zone.

5th play – 3-yard touchdown run by junior running back Ashton Shumpert.

6th play – Prescott ran the option to the left and tossed to Holloway who fumbled following a hit from junior linebacker Richie Brown and was scooped up by junior safety Deontay Evans for what probably would’ve been a 97-yard touchdown.

7th play – Prescott completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Hutcherson

I didn’t do a play-by-play from the second unit but sophomore linebacker Kelan Chairs was very impressive during that series. Seemed like he was involved on every play in some form or fashion.

There is no media availability following Friday’s practice so it is doubtful that I will be there.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
