Postgame interview: Dan Mullen

HEAD COACH DAN MULLEN

Opening Statement:

“I think we had a great crowd here today. That is what is so important to us, putting players in a game situation and seeing how they handle it. This is a different type of pressure, and it is good to have those guys experience that.”

On [Gerri] Green stepping out of [Benardrick] McKinney’s shadow…

“He is his own player. He is a big guy. [Benardrick] McKinney did not look like that when he was a freshman. He understands what type of player he can be if he works hard. He has one of the best work ethics I have been around.”

On finishing the spring and moving on to next season….

“We are probably the only sport in the world where the coaches cannot be with the players for the three months leading up to kickoff with a ball on the field.  You have to have leaders on the team that make sure they are going to improve throughout the summer months.”

On players trying to earn positions on the depth chart…

“The biggest thing to me is that no one put themselves out of position. No one has earned a spot yet, but we have a long training camp to go where guys can continue to learn and improve. I think we are a young unit, and I think the guys have the intensity and the work ethic they need to be successful.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
