MSU women’s golf selected for Raleigh Regional

STARKVILLE – For the third time in as many years, the Mississippi State women’s golf team is hitting the links in an NCAA Regional.

This year the fifth-ranked Bulldogs are the No. 3 seed in the Raleigh Regional hosted by North Carolina State at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The three-day event gets underway on May 6.

“That was one of the regionals we were really excited about,” said senior Ally McDonald of Fulton. “I’m glad we’re going to go there. We’re definitely going to be in a good atmosphere.”

There will be plenty of familiarity among the 18 other teams in the regional as MSU will be one of five teams representing the SEC. South Carolina is the top seed in the regional and LSU is the No. 2 seed. Florida will be the fifth seed and Alabama will be the No. 8 seed.

“No matter where you go there’s going to be SEC teams there because we’re such a stacked conference,” McDonald said.

The top six teams at the event and three individuals will advance to the national championships on May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.

The Bulldogs were one of the teams that did qualify for the national championships last year finishing fourth in the Central Regional and sixth at the NCAA championships.

State is coming off its the best showing in school history this year finishing in the top 10 of all eight regular season tournaments. McDonald led the way for the Bulldogs by winning both the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla., and the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational in West Point in October.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
