Five Bulldogs earn Preseason All-SEC from Athlon

Athlon Sports thought highly enough of Mississippi State to rank the Bulldogs 21st nationally in its preseason poll.

Although the publication considers MSU one of the nation’s top teams, it also predicts the Bulldogs will finish last in the perennially tough SEC West. Athlon believes State will go 7-5 this season with a 3-5 conference mark.

Athlon ranks Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen as the sixth best coach in the league and the 19th rated coach in the nation.

The publication also placed five Bulldogs on its four Preseason All-SEC teams including senior quarterback Dak Prescott, who was a first team selection.

Prescott completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 3,449 yards, 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season while also adding 1,125 yards rushing and 14 scores along with two catches for 35 yards and another touchdown.

Junior wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson and junior defensive tackle Chris Jones were second team selection.

Wilson was MSU’s top receiver in 2014 with 47 catches for 680 yards and nine touchdowns while Jones made 26 tackles, 3.5 for loss, three sacks and eight quarterback hurries.

Senior guard Justin Malone earned a spot on the third team. Malone started 11 of the 12 games in which he played in last fall.

Senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun claimed fourth team recognition. Calhoun finished fourth on the team with 53 tackles last year to go along with 3.5 for loss, one forced fumble, 10 pass deflections and one interception.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
