Mississippi State’s Richie Brown was among 51 players selected to the watch list for the Butkus Award, given annually to the nation’s top linebacker.

Brown has appeared in all 26 games of his college career but has yet to start. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound junior from Long Beach made 50 tackles last season including one for loss. He tied for the team lead in interceptions with three and also recovered a fumble.

Brown was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week as well as SEC Defensive Player of the Week following his three interception performance against Texas A&M.

For his career, Brown has 88 stops, four tackles for loss, two sacks and four interceptions.

The Butkus Award will be narrowed to semifinalists on Nov. 2, finalists on Nov. 23 and the winner will be announced on Dec. 8.

UCLA’s Eric Kendricks claimed the award last year.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
