SEC Media Day: Taveze Calhoun

Mississippi State senior cornerback Taveze Calhoun is the Bulldogs lone returning full-time starter back in the secondary. Calhoun spoke with reporters during SEC Media Days on Tuesday.

On last year’s first No. 1 ranking in school history…

“I think it was great and more for the fans. I feel like we weren’t satisfied with the No. 1 ranking because we wanted to be No. 1 at the end of the year. I think it was great for our university and our fans. It raised the standard of Mississippi State football and we will try continuing to be one of the top teams in the nation.”

On team depth after losing multiple seniors last season…

“I think we will be fine. I believe we have a lot of talent coming in. A lot of our young guys have already proven they are talented. In the spring, a lot of guys stepped into leadership roles and have been very impressive. I’m pretty confident about this year. Even though we lost a lot of guys I still believe we have a lot to build on and have another good season this year.”

On team’s defensive approach this season…

“We want to have a complete defense. We try to stay out of the media with things people say. We just try to take care of ourselves, our defense as a whole, and make sure everyone is working toward the common goal of being the best defense in the nation. We just always try to work and be strong as a group.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
