Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott was picked as one of 78 players on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy on Wednesday.

The Wuerffel Trophy is named after former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel of Florida and is awarded to the FBS player that combines exemplary community service along with athletic and academic achievement.

Prescott broke 12 MSU records in 2014. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder from Haughton, La., completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 3,449 yards, 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while rushing for an additional 986 yards and 14 more scores. He also caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Off the field, Prescott is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and graduated last December with a degree in educational psychology. He has spent the offseason speaking at schools, local youth groups and volunteering with disabled children.

Semfinalists will be announced on Nov. 3 and finalists on Nov. 24. The winner will be announced on Dec. 8. Ole Miss linebacker Deterrian Shackelford won the award last year.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
