Video: Beniquez Brown

Mississippi State junior Beniquez Brown shares his feelings about the Bulldogs first fall practice and what it is like to inherit the leadership role at linebacker.

On getting back on the field for the first time since the spring…

“It was exciting. We had a lot of energy. The plan is to come out to all the practices and give that same effort every day.”

On playing without Benardrick McKinney…

“Some people would look at it like pressure, but I do not. I just come in everyday and do the same things I did last year. I just want to be a more vocal leader than I was last year.”

On what he learned from older players when he was a freshman…

“I had guys like Cam Lawrence and Deontae Skinner to lead the way. It was a process knowing that when they left the opportunity was going to be there for me to lead. I feel like it is my time now. Our young guys are great listeners. If the coach tells them to do something they do it. It is great to have guys like that. They follow us and when it is their time to lead, they will be ready.”

On Gerri Green…

“I tell him every day not to let the comparison of Benardrick McKinney get to him. At the end of the day, he is not Benardrick McKinney. He is Gerri Green. He comes in every day and works hard and is very coachable.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
