Today was not only Mississippi State’s on-campus media day but it was also the last one open to the media for the rest of the regular season. We were permitted to watch the first nine periods which consisted mostly of individual position drills and some special teams work.

It was also the Bulldogs first day in full pads and the last time they’ll be at the practice fields for a while. They will transition into training camp at South Farm starting on Saturday and will stay in a hotel together throughout the duration of their time practicing there.

I’ll share the notes I jotted down in my notebook while I was out there…

Junior cornerback Cedric Jiles was in the injury pit today presumably still rehabbing his hamstring which kept him out all of last season.

Junior wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson was the first player out on the practice field outside of the specialists.

Working at kick returner today were junior Brandon Holloway, senior Will Redmond, sophomore Jamoral Graham, sophomore Donald Gray, junior Fred Brown and sophomore Gabe Myles.

MSU worked a lot on its kickoff and kickoff return units. Kicking off were senior Devon Bell and sophomore Logan Cooke.

The Bulldogs also worked on some 1-on-1 tackling drills with the offense vs. the defense. During this drill, freshman linebacker Leo Lewis plowed over fellow freshman running back Nick Gibson.

I watched the linebackers and cornerbacks doing drills for a quite a while today and Graham really struggled snagging the footballs thrown by coach Deshea Townsend. For every ball any of Townsend’s corners dropped they had to do pushups.

I picked up a couple of notes about Thursday’s practice during the press conference. Offensive line coach John Hevesy told us that Wilson blocked a punt while working as a member of the scout team punt block unit and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales said that Gray had an 80-yard touchdown catch during the scrimmage.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
