Video: Ryan Brown

Mississippi State senior defensive end Ryan Brown speaks about the season opener at Southern Miss and the Bulldogs depth along the defensive line.

On preparing for Southern Miss …

“Last week was a big benefit to us. Last week would have been a game week for us last year, so we treated it like game week. So we actually started preparing for Southern Miss last week, breaking down film and what we need to do to polish things off.”

On Southern Miss’ team this year …

“A lot of those guys are coming back. They have a lot of experience. They have that chemistry now because they went through a lot last year. We’re expecting them to try to shock America, but we’re going to do our best to do our job.”

On last year’s matchup with Southern Miss …

“It was really high energy. We couldn’t wait to get on that field like we are right now.”

On competition within the defensive line …

“You’re always going to find competition. That’s what makes you better everyday. My competition is A.J. [Jefferson]. He’s going to go as hard as he can. I’ve got to make sure that I go harder than him. We always try to push each other. The real push is becoming a leader and being vocal with the team. We’re both just trying to make sure that everything is up to par and that everyone’s mind is set.”

On this year’s rotation on the defensive line …

“I like it. We started a rotation once we were at the farm. It kind of helps us so that we cannot worry about being on the field all day, but also that we can focus on our technique and effort.”

On helping younger players stay focused …

“It’s what we train for. We had weeks to train. We just had to make sure that we stayed focused through those weeks and take it day by day and snap by snap. So we just try to make sure that those young guys that who haven’t been through a game week or what this week is about, we have to make sure that those guys are keyed in and locked in with what they’re doing.”

On the late kickoff of the Southern Miss game …

“Saturday is going to be a lot of walk-throughs and a lot of meetings. We were talking about that this morning. We’re probably going to have three walk-throughs. It’s going to be a long day, but we’ll be ready by the time of that 9 o’clock kickoff.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
