Live from Davis Wade Stadium

Davis Wade Stadium

Davis Wade Stadium

I have arrived in the press box for finally an afternoon kickoff after two late games to start the season for Mississippi State. Campus seems deserted compared to what was here last week for the LSU game. Of course, playing Northwestern State isn’t exactly a marquee game on the schedule. It’s a sunny afternoon and still fairly warm for late September. Remember that today’s game will be televised on the SEC Network.

I’ll be here for the duration and also have Kedrick Storey of the Southern Sentinel alongside so stay tuned for info throughout the day.

Northwestern State has arrived and is walking the field.

MSU has also arrived at the stadium and is walking the field.

This is actually the second time I’ve covered Northwestern State. I also covered the 2007 game in Oxford in which the Demons nearly came back to beat Ole Miss in a 38-31 game.

MSU senior long snapper Winston Chapman is wearing a heavy brace on his left knee and is not going through pregame warm-ups. Bradley limped off the field during the LSU game. Junior Hunter Bradley is listed as his backup.

The Demons will wear white helmets with purple facemasks, white jerseys and purple pants.

MSU senior safety Kendrick Market was wearing the same walking boot during pregame warmups that he had on when I interviewed him on Wednesday. He told me it was just precautionary but I doubt he plays today.

Market was announced as the starter during the pregame video.

Northwestern State won the toss and deferred until the second half. MSU will receive to start the game.

Market is not dressed out for the game.

First play of the game is a 12-yard run by Ashton Shumpert.

Dak Prescott with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Gabe Myles. It was Myles’ first career score. The extra point snap was bad. Logan Cooke completed a pass to A.J. Jefferson but it was shy of the goal line. Remember that Chapman is out, 6-0  MSU 13:21 1st.

Deontay Evans will start at safety for MSU.

J.D. Almond starts at quarterback for NSU.

First play for NSU is a 3-yard run by De’Mard Llorens.

NSU tries a fake field goal but it’s snuffed out by Brandon Bryant.

Redshirt freshman Elgton Jenkins in at left tackle for MSU on the second drive.

Shumpert with a 17-yard touchdown run. Westin Graves PAT, 13-0 MSU 3:42 1ST.

Aeris Williams with a 1-yard touchdown run, his first as a Bulldog. Graves PAT, 20-0 MSU 0:07 1st

Beniquez Brown with a sack.

Following a 48-yard completion to Fred Brown, Prescott fumbled and it’s recovered by Darius Poullard of  NSU.

Stephen Rivers in at quarterback for NSU.

Fred Ross with a 22-yard punt return but fumbles and is recovered by NSU’s Cody Jones.

A.J. Jefferson and Chris Jones with a sack.

Cody Moore with a 52-yard field goal. That’s the same distance and spot Devon Bell missed from last week. That’s the first time NSU has ever scored on MSU (101-3). 20-3, MSU 10:09 2nd.

Prescott is now MSU’s career leader in passing yards with a 45-yard completion to Donald Gray.

Myles with a 6-yard touchdown run. Graves PAT, 27-3 MSU 8:39 2ND.

Moore with a 26-yard field goal, 27-6 MSU 2:27 2nd.

Prescott with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Holloway. That was his first career TD catch. Graves PAT, 34-6 MSU 0:56 2nd.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
