Maroon and Gray combined for nine extra-base hits Saturday in Mississippi State’s third intrasquad scrimmage of the fall, with Maroon walking away with a 9-6 victory that lasted seven innings.

Tied at 4-4 after six innings, the game was played under international tiebreaker rules in the seventh. With a runner at second with one out in the top of the seventh, newcomer Jacob Barfield launched a two-run home run to left to give Maroon a lead it would never relinquish.

Also hitting a home run for Maroon was the red-hot Brent Rooker, who finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and a game-high three RBIs. True freshman Luke Alexander drove in multiple RBIs as well, while junior leadoff hitter Jacob Robson scored twice and collected two base hits.

For Gray, the true freshmen duo of Elih Marrero and Delvin Zinn combined for four RBIs off three hits. Starting pitcher Austin Sexton shined bright in the no decision, striking out a pair in three hitless innings.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
