Sophomore slugger Brent Rooker continued his torrid start to the fall, leading Gray to an 9-5 victory against Maroon Sunday in Mississippi State’s fourth intrasquad scrimmage of the fall. The six-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.
Rooker finished Sunday 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Through the first week of scrimmages, the Germantown, Tenn., native is 7 for 12 (.583) with seven RBIs, five runs, three doubles and two home runs.
Also collecting multiple hits for Gray were senior outfielder Michael Smith (2 for 4, run, RBI), sophomore infielder Ryan Gridley (2 for 4, 2 runs, RBI) and redshirt freshman first baseman Cole Gordon (2 for 2, run, 2 RBIs, run, walk).
For Maroon, both junior outfielder Reid Humphreys (2 for 4, run, RBI) and junior transfer Nate Lowe (2 for 2, 2 RBIs, walk) had multiple hits. True freshman infielder Hunter Stovall also had two RBIs, hitting a two-run home run to left in the fourth.
A 26th-round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs this past summer, Gray starter Jared Padgett made his MSU fall debut Sunday, going 2 2/3 innings with one run allowed on three hits. Redshirt junior right-hander Cole Barlow picked up the win, finishing the game with 1 2/3 shutout stanzas.
