Mississippi State junior linebacker Richie Brown talks about being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week and also his last game against Texas A&M where he made three interceptions.

On being named SEC Defensive Player of the Week…

“I was excited. It’s a real honor.”

On open-field tackling…

“We have a big emphasis on that in practice. Making open-field tackles is a big deal to Coach (Manny) Diaz. That’s one of the big things he has emphasized since he has been here – great tackling.”

On redzone defense…

“It’s what our mindset is since we have been here. We might bend, we might get knocked back sometimes, but we are not going to break. That’s the mindset from strength staff to coaches, it’s how we practice. Bad things happen, so get back on our feet and stop the next drive, put the ball down and stop the next drive.”

On Texas A&M’s offense…

“They are a good high-tempo offense. They like to throw the ball and are pretty good at it. They do a lot of the things normal spread teams do so we’re going to get locked in on that (in practice).”

On performing well against Texas A&M last year…

“It was an exciting game. I try not to focus on it too much though. I don’t want to get caught in the hype, and I just want to focus on having a good game this game. I’m sure they are going to be very careful with handling the ball this year. I’m sure that’s an emphasis they are putting on their team this week. I just want to help my team the best way I can this week and try not to focus on that too much and make sure my team is prepared.”

On linebacker Gerri  Green…

“I try to communicate with him as much as possible. We talk about where he is supposed to fit, gap schemes and what happened on a certain play. It’s hard to see sometimes exactly what happened or how they are blocking something. I try to talk to him about it and walk him through it if he doesn’t understand it, or get information from him so that I know when I go out there.”

On development under Manny Diaz…

“He has helped a lot. He’s brought a whole new angle to how I play and some different fundamentals from Coach (Geoff) Collins. I think between the two of them, it’s been awesome for me having both of their coaching under my belt. They are both great defensive coaches with a lot to offer, and I’ve taken from both of them. That has helped me a lot.”

On an improving pass defense…

“I think it’s a lot better. I think our linebackers are helping out the DBs more so their names aren’t put negatively in the paper when really it could be anybody’s fault on defense. We are trying to make sure we help them out and take some pressure off them. They get a lot of negative stuff, but really, it could be our fault too as well.”

On changing game plan against pass-heavy offense in Texas A&M…

“It does change. It’s more pass emphasis. You notice that the first day of practice when you switch roles. It’s an adjustment we’re going to make and I think we’ll be ok. We’ve played spread teams in the past so I think we’ll be alright.”
