Junior left-hander Daniel Brown struck out five in three innings of shutout ball Sunday afternoon, leading Gray to a 3-0 blanking of Maroon in Mississippi State’s 10th scrimmage of the fall. The six-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.

Joining Brown in the two-hit shutout of Maroon were right-handed pitchers Paul Young and Ryan Rigby. Young fanned four batters in two stanzas, before Rigby picked up the save with a scoreless frame.

For Maroon, starter Dakota Hudson struck out four batters in 2 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits and two walks. Junior transfer Blake Smith relieved Hudson and recorded two outs, before junior right-hander Zac Houston struck out five in 2 2/3 innings.

After Houston loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch, redshirt freshman southpaw Andrew Mahoney gave up a two-RBI single to freshman infielder Luke Alexander to give Gray a 3-0 lead. Freshman righty Ryan Cyr finished the pitching line for Maroon by getting a lineout to second base.

In all, eight MSU pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
