Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen joined the rest of the league coaches on the SEC Teleconference on Wednesday.

Here is a transcript of Mullen’s time on the call:

Opening comment:

Mullen: “We’re excited to be back home. We have three straight home games and I think that’s huge for us because three of our first five games have been on the road. We get an opportunity to get in our home confines is a way to continue to improve as a team and take steps forward with the progress we’ve throughout this season so far.

We have to do it across the board on offense, defense and special teams. Every phase of the game we have to find a way to continue to make some more plays and win games.”

With Dak Prescott’s career coming to a close, what are you doing to prepare for the next starting quarterback so it will be a smooth transition?

Mullen: “We’ve got some really good young players at the quarterback position. Damian Williams is here and has started a game in his career before. He started in a huge Egg Bowl victory and has a little bit of experience.

Then you look and we have three young quarterbacks that have the opportunity to be pretty good with Nick Fitzgerald, Elijah Staley and Nick Tiano.

So for us, they continue to train. The issue is there’s not going to be that game experience so you’ve got to coach and they’ve got to watch Dak. The best thing they have going is they get to watch a guy that is a great player that has had a lot of success to see how he prepares, carries himself and what he does during the work week to get ready for the game. That’s a great guy to learn from. All they have to do is do what he did next year.”

How do you get guys to focus in for a game where you’re heavily favored?

Mullen: “I think the biggest thing for us is we’re really disappointed that we didn’t play well last week. One of the things that happens with that is guys are really anxious to get back on the field and redeem their performance regardless of who we’re playing.

Everybody’s a little disappointed in their performance last week so they’re real excited to get back out on the field and go kind of put a performance together that we’re going to be happy with and will be proud of. I think that’s the biggest focus for us right now.”

What do you see on film with Troy?

Mullen: “I see a team that really plays hard. I know they’ve got a new coach and you can see they’re buying in to what he wants. Schematically, they are a lot of guys who are learning the system and the offense, defense and all of those things.

But you want to look for a team that has really bought in to what’s going on with the new coaching staff, you look at how hard they play and they certainly play hard.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
